Concept art !!!


hi im sano76 and welcome to my rock opera

first, i wanna thank everyone who played the game so far! strangers, friends, i don’t care; i’m just thankful you played!

so, i decided to show you guys a little bit of concept art and explain my creative process when designing and making the game.

1. the title! it was one of the first things i made after coming up with the game itself, so it’s different from the final product. the picture takes place in a city outside the castle instead of the garden, since at the time i thought i could make more content in such a short time, but i had to stick with the garden only since i got stuck making the first puzzle for like, 2 days.

the title itself, i used an outline brush to write out the words before using a lasso fill brush to make the water

2. character designs! (even though there’s only 2)

betty!!! our fav fish princess. when i first designed her, i wanted her to radiate innocence and naivety. betty wants more in her life than just staying in a castle. even though she lives in luxury, betty wants to go out and explore the kingdom beyond the castle walls. even if she has to do manual labour!

  • also her sleeves are supposed to end in little waterfalls
  • betty is also a betta fish, which is seen in the top-right corner

now we have betty’s dad !!! i wanted him to look a little aged, intimidating, and a little pathetic. i struggled with his hair, since i had 3 different designs. it wouldv’ve been 2, but i was listening to specimen girl ft gackpo while drawing and it might’ve has an influence. my brother said he looks like a girl.

  • the king is supposed to be a king mackerel
  • his outfit was inspired off of european kings

3. gameplay !!!

here are some concepts for the puzzles! i only got to make 2, since i ran out of time. the seaweed gardening ended up being the only puzzle gimmick used. i’m not sure if i consider the gate as a puzzle, since it’s just going up to the panels and pressing “enter” a few times.

this level was the hardest room for me, in the end i gave up and just made betty rake seaweed. another concept i made for this was to add little fishies in each of the pools, and one of those fishes had the gear needed to fix the gate. betty was supposed to go walk up to them and talk to the fish and interrogate them to see who stole the gear.

and you’ve made it to the end !!!! there isn’t much art, since there’s only a little bit of content. but i hope that it’s enough to satisfy your curiosity or whatever. feel free to ask questions if you want !!!

also, i joined 2 more game jams, expect something spooky for halloween !

Completely forgot to comment when I initially saw this day of, but it's amazing to see your process and all the little behind the scenes bits about the game!

Favorite bit of info is the unused face of Betty, with the way more jagged and shaky lines and coloring makes a cool artistic piece and a silly facial expression, love to see it!
